MOSCOW, June 1 (Sputnik) - Arsenal and Switzerland midfielder Granit Xhaka's injury turned out to be a minor one, the Swiss Football Association said on Thursday night.
"We could already see that the ligaments were intact, but we wanted to play it safe, also with regard to the meniscus. We are very relieved that it is only a painful bone bruise," team doctor Pierre-Etienne Fournier said as quoted by the association on their official website.
Xhaka sustained a knee injury during Thursday's training and was unable to leave the field without assistance. He was later taken to hospital for a scan on his knee.
Earlier, media reported that the 25-year-old's injury could leave him sidelined for the upcoming FIFA World Cup in Russia.
"I'm very relieved," Xhaka said after returning to the team's hotel following the medical examination.
According to the Swiss Football Association, the 61-cap player will miss some of the national team's training sessions and will not play in Sunday's friendly against Spain as he is supposed to undergo a follow-up examination.
Russia will host its first World Cup from June 14 to July 15. The fixtures will be played at 12 stadiums across 11 cities. Switzerland will face Brazil, Costa Rica and Serbia in Group E.
