MOSCOW, June 11 (Sputnik) - Uruguay defender Jose Maria Gimenez said Monday that his country's first World Cup match against Egypt will be the most important game for their team in the group stage of the tournament.
The Uruguayan national football team arrived in Russia on Sunday. During the tournament, the team will be based in Nizhny Novgorod, where they have already started training for the match against Egypt in Yekaterinburg on June 15.
"The match against Egypt will be the most important one because it will set the tone for the whole tournament," Gimenez said as quoted by France-Presse.
Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera said that he did not consider his team the favorite of the group.
"We do not consider ourselves huge favorites. Nothing will be clear before the match gets underway," the 31-year-old goalkeeper said. He also said he hoped that Egypt's forward Mohamed Salah would recover in time from his shoulder injury and will be fit to play at the World Cup.
Uruguay were drawn to Group A, where they will also face Saudi Arabia in Rostov-on-Don on June 20 and hosts Russia in Samara on June 25.
