Cavani was injured during the South American side's 2-1 win over Portugal in the round of 16 game and was substituted in the 74th minute.

According to the French sports daily L'Equipe, the 31-year-old, who scored three goals in four matches at the World Cup in Russia, underwent a medical examination and was diagnosed with muscle damage in his left calf, though he had avoided rupturing the muscle in question.

Even after a three-day rest, Cavani is still in pain and the coaching staff need to decide whether it is too much of a risk for him to play.

It is still unclear if Cavani will start the France game on the bench or not.

Uruguay will take on France at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium on Friday.
