The Video Assistant Referee (VAR) has proved to be very helpful during the World Cup in Russia, as it helps to avoid second-guessing the decisions made by match officials, FIFA's Director of Refereeing Massimo Busacca said.
The tournament in Russia is the first World Cup where VAR is being used, and is helping match officials to avoid possible mistakes by allowing them to review video replays of game episodes.
“I think, the answer is VAR helped a lot… Today, the fact is that after 48 games we don’t have a single scandal [regarding referees’ decisions], which is relevant and very important in football,” Busacca told journalists at a press conference, adding that without VAR, the whole of Friday's press conference would be dedicated to discussing the referees decisions.
The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off in Russia on June14 and will continue until July 15, with the games being played in 11 cities across the country.
