"A traditional [commemoration event] 'Memory Candle' will take place at Mamayev Kurgan on June 22. On this day we are planning to light up the installation 'Light of Great Victory' that we usually hold on May 9. We would like the [2018 World Cup] guests to see it," Vasin told Sputnik.

He added that there was no intention to surprise the visitors to the city but to show them the Russian perspective of the major events of World War II.

Volgograd was the site of one of the most important and bloodiest battles of World War II that lasted since August 1942 till February 1943 and ended in a decisive Soviet victory over Germany and its allies.

The match between Iceland and Nigeria will take place at the 45,000-seater Volgograd Arena on June 22, Day of Sorrow and Remembrance of Victims of War in Russia.
