BREST, July 16 (Sputnik) - Argentina legend Diego Maradona, who had signed a three-year contract to become FC Dynamo Brest’s chairman, praised the organization of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia on Monday, saying that it was "wonderful."
Maradona arrived in Belarus earlier on Monday. The 57-year-old had signed the contract with Dynamo Brest in May but could not take up is role earlier because of the FIFA World Cup in Russia.
"The organization was wonderful, every detail was taken into consideration," Maradona told journalists.
He added that "there were some people who wanted to do damage to the tournament," but the security services worked efficiently.
"We've seen a very good tournament, many countries surprised me, many players made a good showing," Maradona added.
According to the World Cup legend, the Russian national football team have achieved much more that had been expected of them at their home tournament.
Russia's first-ever World Cup came to a close on Sunday, with France beating Croatia 4-2 in Moscow to lift the trophy for the second time. Russia reached the quarter-finals of their home tournament after advancing to the knockout stage for the first time since the end of the Soviet era.
