Honorary President of the Russian Olympic Committee Alexander Zhukov said on Sunday that the 2018 World Cup final match was "bright" and "stood up to the tournament."
On Sunday, France beat Croatia 4-2 in the final at Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium to lift their second World Cup trophy. Croatia midfielder and captain Luka Modric won the Golden Ball award, which is presented to the best player at each FIFA World Cup.
"The final match was bright, just like the whole tournament. The final match stood up to the tournament. It was a great match. I agree with the decision to choose Modric [as the Golden Ball winner]. He was really the best at this tournament," Zhukov told journalists.
France forward Kylian Mbappe won the FIFA Young Player award.
'It 's a pity that there is an award for the youngest player, but there is no award for the oldest player. I'd give it to [Russia retired defender] Sergey Ignashevich. I'd grade the World Cup with an 'A.' I haven't seen any shortcomings. I think Russia played quite well," Zhukov added.
Playing on their home turf, the Russian national team achieved their best result at a FIFA World Cup since the break-up of the Soviet Union in 1991, going as far as the quarter-finals, where they lost to Croatia on penalties.
