DEFENDING champions Egypt sealed a place in the African Nations Cup quarter-finals by beating Mozambique 2-0 at the Estadio do Benguela in Group C.
It was an uninspiring encounter and it was, perhaps fittingly, an own goal - from Mozambique'sDario Khan - which broke the deadlock after 47 minutes.
Egypt added a second nine minutes from time as some nice build-up play between Ahmed Hassan and Emad Moteab saw the former play in Mohamed Gedo.
The substitute flicked the ball up, turned and smashed a volley home.
Earlier, Nigeria reignited their hopes of advancing with a 1-0 victory over Benin in an entertaining game in Benguela.
Ayegbeni Yakubu's spot-kick four minutes before the break was enough to separate the sides.
The results leave Mozambique and Benin two points behind Nigeria with one match remaining.
Benin face Egypt on Wednesday while Mozambique take on Nigeria.
