The club tonight ended local speculation by confirming they would be switching to red and blue colours with just gold detail to keep in line with their sister rugby league side, about to be bought by Jets owner Nathan Tinkler next month.

Jets active supporters The Squadron  oppose the move and launched an email campaign earlier today expressing their “overwhelming disapproval” of any mooted change.

“Our gold strip is distinctive, it is easily recognisible at the local and national football levels as the Newcastle United Jets and has been associated with passion, pride and success over the six years since the A-League commenced,” read the email.

“Embarking on a major change by removing the gold from the home strip without any consultation whatsoever, I believe you risk unnecessary angst and potential alienation of many loyal supporters.”

The email campaign was called off afer just a couple of hours where the club was swamped with emails backing the current colour scheme.

Fans were given assurances - but now Jets have confirmed the feared change will be going ahead.

Jets fan Tim Verschelden told au.fourfourtwo.com that it was the fans who pay good money for Jets shirts and membership and have a right to their input on any planned changes to club colours.

He added: “It’s a joke. They’re trying to take away the club’s identity.

"The gold has been us since the start of the A-League and it sets us apart from the Knights.”

This evening the club released a statement cinfirming the new designs are currently with the FFA awaiting approval for next season.

"The home strip will feature Newcastle’s recognised colours of red and blue while honouring the Jets six year A-League heritage with gold detail," said the statement.

"The Football Club Advisory Board in consultation with Seniors Players have also selected a Black and White Away strip, the traditional colours of Football in Northern NSW."

The club added: "It is the policy of the Tinkler Sports Group that all sporting teams under the TSG umbrella will have consistent colours starting with the Jets next season.

"Jets supporters should be assured that in the future, in line with the policy that the Tinkler Sports Group has offered Newcastle Knights fans, members approval will be required to change the team name, colours, location or home ground.

"By reverting to both the club and the region's recognised colours, we hope to not only mark the start of an exciting new period for the club but also pay homage to the region’s strong football heritage."
