EXCLUSIVE: Holger Osieck’s former club Urawa Red Diamonds are one of a number of clubs worldwide tracking off-contract Newcastle Jets central defender Ljubo Milicevic.
J-League sources have confirmed the link with the 29-year-old Socceroo defender who has been in career-best form this season alongside Nikolai Topor-Stanley in the heart of the Jets’ defence.
It's believed a number of Chinese clubs have also been circling the player but it's understood CSL offers have been rejected.
Milicevic also caught the eye last season during the 2009 Asian Champions League group stage and was a Socceroo squad player when Australia defeated Uruguay in Sydney to clinch a place at Germany 2006.
If the J-League move was to happen it would boost the Saitama-based side’s Aussie contingent to two with the highly talented Matt Spiranovic also plying his trade with the 2007 AFC Champions League winners.
It’s believed there is also interest for Milicevic from K-League club Chunam Dragons as well as clubs in Turkey, Switzerland, Denmark and USA.
Milicevic did not play against MLS side LA Galaxy two weeks ago in a high profile friendly in Newcastle – an injury against Central Coast three days earlier ruled him out – but it’s understood David Beckham’s club are also said to be tracking his form along with Chicago Fire.
If Milicevic, a former Young Socceroo and Olyroo skipper capped six times for the national team, was to sign with a US club he might find himself on the same pitch as former Melbourne Victory teammate and striker Danny Allsopp currently on the books of DC United.
National coach Holger Osieck has submitted a 50-man squad to the AFC for next month's Asian Cup with Milicevic and Spiranovic two names being touted as Socceroo defensive options for Qatar 2011 and beyond.
