The Newcastle Jets have claimed just their second win of the season, defeating a Brisbane Roar side without their star-striker Adam Taggart for most of the game, after he injured his hamstring last week.
Ivan Vujica- 7
Sloppy on the ball at times with a pass accuracy of 71%, however the left back did create two meaningful chances.
Steven Ugarkovic- 7
Kept the Jets midfield ticking over, completing 38 passes and hardly missing a target all game. Spurned a good opportunity in the 31st minute after a great ball from Jair.
Ben Kantarovski- 7
Does the dirty work well, and doesn’t make a big deal of himself. Had a lot of success passing into the gaps in the Roar defensive unit.
Ronald Vargas- 8
A late inclusion, initially not named in the squad. Showed glimpses of the mesmerising skills A-League fans witnessed before his leg-break last season and made a meaningful contribution to the Jets' attacks.
Jair- 8
Finally scored his first goal since September 2017 and his first ever for the Jets, sealing the match with a neat finish into the top right corner after a Petratos counter-attack.
Kaine Sheppard- 8.5
The Englishman was isolated at times but showed good hold-up play to involve the oncoming midfielders. Beautiful outside of his left foot finish to put the Jets up 1-0. Will be good competition for O’Donovan once his suspension is finally complete.
Dimi Petratos- 8
Often lacking his trademark arrogance and confidence, but was at the heart of the counter-attack that lead to the Jets’ second and decisive goal. Started to dominate more in the second half after Vargas and Jair were subbed out.
SUBS
Nick Cowburn- n/a
Replaced Jair in the 78th minte.
Mitch Austin- 6
Replaced Vargas in the 74th minute. Was the beneficiary of numerous Jets counter-attacks deep in stoppage time, however none lead to goals.
Matthew Ridenton- 6
Replaced Sheppard in the 65th minute. Fluffed a brilliant opportunity for a third goal, comically tripping over the ball from 5 meters out.
