EXCLUSIVE: Perth Glory are expected to announce Robbie Fowler’s return as former club players salivate at the partnership with new international marquee signing Shane Smeltz.
This morning Glory owner and Chairman Tony Sage officially announced the signing of Smeltz as the club’s international marquee for next season.
Smeltz, 29, has scored 49 A-League goals in stints with Wellington Phoenix and Gold Coast United and is set to become only the second player to reach 50 goals in the competition.
Fowler, who turned 36 earlier this month, is set to form a lethal combination with the Kiwi hitman signed from Gold Coast in the off-season as the A-League strugglers search for that elusive winning combination.
However when Fowler is announced remains unclear but the former Liverpool legend has already verbally agreed to return to the club next season on a pay deal under the salary cap.
The deal has yet to be signed off officially though.
Glory are building strongly for next season and have also signed star keeper Danny Vukovic from Wellington and Dean Heffernan from Melbourne Heart.
But it’s the Smeltz and Fowler partnership that’s getting fans excited about the new season.
Former Perth Glory player Nick Rizzo played for two seasons at Liverpool between 1996 and 1998 during the period when Fowler was in his pomp at Anfield.
“If Robbie can play for another year then the club should keep him because he’s good for the league," Rizzo told au.fourfourtwo.com.
"It doesn’t matter his age and maybe he’s not as quick as he used to be. But he’s still playing well. Watch him play. He’s still playing well.
"His touches are brilliant and his finishing is phenomenal. Alongside Shane he'll be great. It doesn’t matter about age you give him half a chance around the box and he’ll score.
“Even just for the public image of the A-League to the general public back in England to have Robbie Fowler here, it can’t be a negative.”
As for the “God” persona, Rizzo said back in Liverpool there was never any room for egos. He recalled Fowler as being just one of the lads.
“He’d talk to the young players and muck around with them," said Rizzo. "It was nothing like, ‘I’m Robbie Fowler I’m better than all of you’. It was nothing like that. That whole tag of The Spice Boys, it was nothing like that.
“I actually saw Robbie last January on the Gold Coast when he was there for an A-League game with Perth. I hadn’t seen him in ten years and he was like ‘Nick how are you going? A top bloke and we had a good chat.”
Rizzo spoke to FourFourTwo magazine about his two seasons at Liverpool. It’s part of a special feature on the club in the next issue on sale May 4 featuring exclusive interviews with Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez and a look at the next generation of youth stars from the Anfield club’s academy.
