CLICK HERE TO SEE THE JETS TRAIN

Stung by a 1-1 home draw against cellar dwellers Gold Coast United last weekend, the Jets face one of their biggest games of the season against the reigning A-League champions.

The sixth-placed Jets’ finals destiny is in their hands with two games left against Roar then Sydney away.

But after their patchy performance against crisis club Gold Coast, Topor-Stanley said improvement was needed across the board against Ange Postecoglou's men.

“We definitely have to create more chances and have more going for us up front. A bit more penetration in behind the lines," he said.

"So if we can get that and hold of the ball a bit more we should be fine.”

Jets coach Gary Van Egmond worked on relentless pressing at training on Tuesday. It’s a point not lost on the big defender.

“We’re trying to play a similar game to them [Roar] and press as well,” he said after the session.

“And our second-phase play instead of concentrating on the ball, we have to make sure of our awareness.

“But everyone lifts against them [Roar] and we seem to find that extra gear when we play them. It’s a pity we can’t find that every week.”

He explained his entertaining corner-post goal celebration against Gold Coast United was seven years in the making.

But now he’s got the feel, he’s planning on more in the future.

“I’d like to score way more goals than I do and realistically I should," he said. "I’ve spurned a few over the years but with two games left hopefully I can get another one."

The mood was lightened further when teammate Ruben Zadkovich crashed Topor-Stanley’s press conference to jokingly ask what the powerful defender would do if the feisty Berisha – dubbed “Bez” for short – invited him down the tunnel for a post-match ruck.

“I’d probably take you with me as you’re my bodyguard. You’ve got the left-right goodnight happening,” he joked in reference to Zadkovich.

“We all have to mix it all over the park. Hopefully we can win the battle [on the pitch] first.”

Berisha, on 18 goals, is miles ahead of his three main rivals on the scorers charts; Jeremy Brockie, Ryan Griffiths and Shane Smeltz, all on nine goals.

The battle between Berisha and Topor-Stanley will be one of the key match-ups in what looms as a fascinating encounter in front of what should be a large crowd at the Hunter stadium.

“He seems to pop up at the right time," he said. "He’s a bit of a goal-poacher, like a Smeltz. He doesn’t seem to be involved much then he comes up with two goals.

“So he’s always dangerous and we have to mindful of him.”

Zadkovich, who is set to return to the starting XI, said that he didn’t watch Roar’s 1-1 draw against the Reds.

He explained that he wasn’t 100% sure of the game-plan on Saturday, but was supremely optimistic of three points given the Roar’s injuries and ACL commitments.

He added: “We’re confident, we’re pumped and we know we can beat them. No worries there.”

Saturday’s game will also feature a Newcastle “Old Boys” match as part of the pre-game featuring former players such as Andy Roberts.
