MOSCOW, July 18 (Sputnik) - Russians consider their national team’s goalkeeper Igor Akinfeev and forward Artem Dzyuba to be the best players of the 2018 FIFA World Cup, a poll conducted by the Russian Public Opinion Research Center revealed on Wednesday.
“According to the respondents, the best players of the 2018 FIFA World Cup are Igor Akinfeev (19 percent) and Artem Dzyuba (13 percent). Foreign players were named less frequently: Luka Modric by 5 percent, Kylian Mbappe by 2 percent, Cristiano Ronaldo by 1 percent,” the pollster said.
Zenit St. Petersburg forward Dzyuba scored three goals at the World Cup while CSKA Moscow keeper Akinfeev saved two spot-kicks in the penalty shootout as Russia edged out Spain in the round of 16.
Modric captained Croatia to their maiden World Cup final, where they lost 4-2 to France, and was awarded the Golden Ball for the best player of the tournament, while France's 19-year-old Mbappe, who netted four goals in Russia, was named the best young player.
The country-wide phone poll was conducted on Monday among 1,600 respondents aged 18 and older, with the margin of error not exceeding 2.5 percent.
The World Cup took place in 11 Russian cities from June 14 to July 15.
